Gear & Home is a reader-supported website. This page explains, in plain language, how we make money – because you deserve to know before you click anything.
The short version
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, the retailer pays us a small commission. You pay exactly the same price either way. The commission comes out of the retailer’s pocket, not yours.
Amazon Associates
Gear & Home is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
Other affiliate programs
We also participate in affiliate programs with outdoor retailers and brands, which may include REI, Backcountry, and gear manufacturers (via networks such as AvantLink, Impact, and ShareASale). The list of active partnerships changes over time as programs are added or discontinued.
What this does NOT affect
- Our rankings. Commission rates never determine which products we recommend or where they rank. Many of our top picks earn us less than the alternatives below them.
- Your price. Affiliate links never increase what you pay.
- Our honesty. Every recommended product includes real drawbacks. If a popular product isn’t worth your money, we say so – affiliate link or not.
Why we use affiliate links
Commissions are what pay for the time spent researching reviews, building comparison tables, and keeping guides updated. The alternative would be sponsored posts or selling placements to brands – and we believe that model produces dishonest recommendations. If you find our guides useful and choose to buy through our links, thank you: it genuinely keeps this site running.
